Simple Minds Books and Biographies

Simple Minds : The Race Is The Prize
Author : Alfred Bos
Publisher : Virgin Books, London, 1984
ISBN : 0-86369066-1

This is the only official Simple Minds biography which was written by Alfred Bos who became one of the band's long term friends, and was also illustrated by Malcolm Garrett, who provided many of the group's 80s sleeve designs.
It's one of the strangest books I've ever read : Bos covers the mythology of the band rather than cite straight facts, figures and places. Features some good colour photographs.

Simple Minds : Glittering Prize
Author : Dave Thomas
Publisher : Omnibus Press, London, 1985
ISBN : 0-71190617-3

This was an unauthorised biography which was written by taking quotes from the various interviews the band gave to Melody Maker/NME etc. Dave Thomas has written a host of these biographies (including one for U2).
It included loads of good pictures but they had no captions. It also tended to concentrate on trends and other bands of the period. On the plus side, it featured a very good discography section.

Simple Minds
Author : Adam Sweeting
Publisher : Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1988
ISBN : 0-283-99581-5

The best of the biographies. Adam Sweeting was to be the official biographer, and supplied the text for the New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) and Sparkle In The Rain tour programmes; however, Alfred Bos suddenly got the job.
It is the most informed, best researched biography (and he had access to the band) - after reading this you won't view the band in the same light again. Unfortunately there aren't many photos.

Street Fighting Years
Author : Alfred Bos
Publisher : Virgin, London, 1989
ISBN : 0-86369333-4

This was originally released in the Street Fighting Years box set. It was primarily a music book containing the music and lyrics for Street Fighting Years, but it also featureds interviews with Jim, Charlie and Mick about the making of the album and the evolution of the songs.
Well written with loads of colour pictures - the only drawback is that Bos writes without using capital letters, which makes it rather difficult to read.

Simple Minds : A Visual Documentary
Author : Mike Wrenn
Publisher : Omnibus, London, 1990
ISBN : 0-71192076-1

This was a glossy, colour, month-by-month history of the band, separated by quotes from Jim at the end of each year. A coffee-table book, but not an enthralling read. Took the reader up to 1990.

Simple Minds
Author : ?
Publisher : Arcana, September 1991
ISBN : 88-85859-63-1

The subtitle in English is : The story of Jim Kerr/Interviews, stories, concerts/Complete discography. Unfortunately, I don't have this book so I can't comment furthur.
