- Additional Information
- "Good evening Southern California. Before we start the show tonight I have to warn you: the tape is
rolling, this will be a live concert broadcast. Can you handle that? Be alive man, let's give it up for
Virgin recording artist Simple Minds".
- After the introduction, She's A River kicks in. "How's it going?". The new line
up (including Mark Schulmann on drums) is tight, with She's A River unveiled in it's
album form. And The Band Played On also follows the album version until the middle-8. The band
then jump seamlessly into Real Life finishing the song with the first verse and chorus.
- Waterfront is still in it's Real Life tour form underpined by the 89 remix. After
a brief fade, Charlie introduces an extended version of Great Leap Forward, which features extra
instrumental work at the end.
- "You people... Stand By Love" An energetic performance, but Charlie comes in too
early having to repeat the opening riff, and some of the backing vocals are too intrusive, being
too high in the mix.
- "It's called... Don't You (Forget About Me)". Even Jim's introduction sounds tired, the song
not as fresh as the newer material. "You can have my job, that's cool by me" muses Jim as the
crowd refuse to stop the "la la las", "then I can drink beer all night." Hyptonised
is performed with more technique and style and is far more pleasing.
- After a brief fade, See The Lights appears in a totally new form. Soft percussion, acoustic
guitars and a rolling mechanical synth line which predictes Néapolis, this is a far more
intimate version (which sadly didn't survive the trip back over the Atlantic).
- Sanctify Yourself ups the tempo and almost refuses to end, and
is followed by standard run through of Alive And Kicking. The best is left until last, with the
band coming back for an encore with an acoustic version of White Light/White Heat - totally unlike
the version from 15 years previously.
- Recorded at an industry shindig at the tail end of their US tour, this CD captures the early arrangements
and set list of the Good News tour. Vital for the acoustic versions of See The Lights and
White Light/White Heat.
- It's a good, clear mix, thanks to this recording being plucked from the airwaves of a US radio FM broadcast.
Unfortunately the bootleggers screwed up the intro to Hypnotised, inserting another index and
allowing the CD to skip.
- Despite that, this one should be in every collection.
